States of India by lowest Sex Ratio - Top 10
A concerning situation emerges when we examine the states with the lowest sex ratios in India. Daman & Diu tops this list with a notably low ratio of 618 females for every 1000 males. Close on its heels are Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Chandigarh with sex ratios of 773 and 817 respectively. It is crucial to underline that these are Union Territories with relatively smaller population sizes, and hence, any imbalance in the sex ratio can have a more pronounced societal impact.
Moving onto larger states, Delhi, the country's capital, demonstrates a sex ratio of 867, significantly below the national average. The states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, which are amongst the most populous regions of India, also depict a lower sex ratio with 878 and 912 females per 1000 males respectively.
Further up north, the states of Sikkim and Punjab also show sex ratios lower than the national average - 889 and 895 respectively. This is indicative of the fact that gender imbalance is not confined to any particular region of the country and is a national issue that needs urgent attention.
The sex ratio is a critical barometer of gender equity in a society. Low sex ratios highlight the pressing need for policies and interventions that focus on gender equity. It calls for proactive measures in areas such as female education, eradication of gender bias, and enhancing the safety and well-being of women.
