India has a total slum population of approximately 65.5 million, which constitutes about 5.41% of its overall populace. The male-female distribution within these slums is fairly even with a sex-ratio of 929 females per 1000 males. The overall literacy rate in these areas is 77.72%.
The state with the largest slum population is Maharashtra, housing over 11.8 million people (10.54% of its total population). Its literacy rate is 84.55%, but it shows a notable gender disparity with a sex-ratio of 873. Andhra Pradesh follows, with nearly 10.2 million people living in slums, constituting 12.04% of its state population, and an impressive sex-ratio close to parity at 997.
West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh are next in line with 6.4 million and 6.2 million slum populations respectively, followed by Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh, both having around 5.8 million people residing in slums.
States like Kerala, Mizoram, and Puducherry have significantly high literacy rates in slums, touching 93.11%, 98.11%, and 81.39% respectively. Despite its high overall literacy rate, Kerala has a smaller slum population in terms of absolute numbers.
n terms of sex-ratio in the slum areas, Mizoram stands out with 1022 females per 1000 males, showcasing a unique female dominance.On the other end, the union territory of Chandigarh has a lower sex-ratio of 784, highlighting a gender disparity.
