Literacy rate in India

The overall literacy rate in India now stands at 72.98%. The literacy rate among males is 80.88%, while the female literacy rate has risen to 64.63%. This continues to reflect a significant gender disparity in literacy rates across the country.

State-wise, Kerala retains its leadership position with an impressive literacy rate of 94%. The male literacy rate in Kerala is 96.11% and the female literacy rate stands at 92.07%. Following closely, Lakshadweep boasts a literacy rate of 91.85%, with male and female literacy rates at 95.56% and 87.95% respectively.

Mizoram, Goa, and Tripura also have commendable literacy rates. Mizoram's literacy rate is 91.33%, with males at 93.35% and females at 89.27%. Goa stands at 88.7%, with male and female literacy rates of 92.65% and 84.66% respectively. Tripura has a literacy rate of 87.22%, with 91.53% of males being literate compared to 82.73% of females.

On the other end of the spectrum, Bihar has a literacy rate of 61.8%, showing some improvement but still lagging behind. Other states with literacy rates below 70% include Arunachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. The gender disparity remains evident in these regions, with male literacy rates consistently surpassing female rates.
